Wu Tianming

Wu Tianming (Chinese吴天明/吴天明, Pinyin Wú Tianming; * October 19, 1939 in Shaanxi, † March 4, 2014 ) was a Chinese film director and producer. He is regarded as "one of the most colorful figures of the new Chinese cinema. "

Life

Wu was born the son of a communist guerrilla fighter in Shaanxi. He grew up in modest circumstances, was with his family, however, constantly on the run from the men Chiang Kai -shek. After the proclamation of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949 Wu's father grew up in the communist cadres. Wu studied at the film school in Beijing and was recorded in 1960 in the drama department of the movie studios founded in 1958 in Xi'an. He appeared in minor roles, before turning to directing. The Cultural Revolution interrupted his film career, he as an assistant director Cui Wei resumed again in 1974. Two years later he became an assistant in Xi'an Studio 1983 and finally director of the movie studios. In this role, he won numerous young directors in part, directly from the Film Academy in Xi'an Studios " and offered them all the freedom to realize their ideas." He thus became the producer and mentor of some controversial directors of the " Fifth Generation " as Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Zhang Yimou.

With his criticism of Confucianism and the ideologies of Mao and Deng Wu created numerous enemies in China and in 1989 became relieved as " intellectual mastermind of the student protests " of his offices. Wu, who had assumed at the time a lecturer at Columbia University, was in 1989 in America in exile, where he worked in a video store, among others. His daughter and wife followed him into exile in 1992 and 1993.
