Wuffingas

The Wuffinger (Old English Wuffingas ) were from the 6th to the middle of the 8th century, the royal dynasty in the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia.

Mythical origin

According to the genealogy in the Historia Brittonum ( History of the Britons ) gender ( fictional) of Odin came from.

Perhaps the Wuffinger come from the Swedish- Baltic race of Wylfinger that are mentioned in the Beowulfepos. Hroðmund was associated with the same name of the Danish king Hrothgar Söhn. Wehha has been associated with Weohstan, the father Wiglafs, in conjunction.

Some historians hold already Wehha ( † about 571 ) for a historical person, while it is still questionable for others, whether it is a historical person or only mythical founder of the dynasty at Wuffa.

Historical Dynasty

The first "historical" King was Raedwald (around 593 to 625 ), which was recognized as Bretwalda. This supremacy lost East Anglia after Rædwalds death of Northumbria. Rædwalds son and successor Eorpwald was murdered to 627/628 by the usurper Ricbert. The only superficially Christianized East Anglia fell back into paganism.

To 631 ascended Eorpwalds half brother Sigebert the throne. He brought missionaries into the country and built according to the Frankish model school. Sigebert abdicated in 637 and retired as a monk in a monastery back. He was succeeded by his relative Ecgric, who had ruled as a king in a part of East Anglia. Both were, as King Anna (around 640-654 ) in the fight against the expansive King Penda of Mercia. Probably sat Penda Anna's brother Æthelhere ( 654-655 ) as subregulus ( Under King ) a. Æthelhere was apparently largely dependent on Penda in his short reign.

Under Æthelheres brother Æthelwald ( 655-664 ) East Anglia was once again independent and could probably even exert influence on the neighboring kingdom of Essex. Æthelwalds nephew Ealdwulf ( 664-713 ) ran for about 685 under the ever-increasing dominance of Mercia. With the death of his son Ælfwalds ( 713-749 ) went out the dynasty of Wuffinger in the year 749
