Wulf Herzogenrath

Wulf Herzogenrath ( born March 23, 1944 in Rathenow, Brandenburg ) is a German art historian and curator. He is considered a leading expert on video art and video installations.

Biography

Duke Rath studied art history, archeology and ethnography in Kiel, Berlin and Bonn. 1967 and 1968 he worked for the Württemberg Art Society basic exhibition catalog "50 Years of Bauhaus ". In 1970 he received his doctorate at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with Herbert von Einem on the murals by Oskar Schlemmer. He then found a job at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, headed the art ring.

1973 Duke Rath was appointed the age of 28 to date, recent director of the Kunstverein. The Cologne Kunstverein, he headed for 16 years until 1989. During this period he was also a lecturer in art education at the Cologne factory schools (FH of Art and Design ).

He was married to Stephanie Herzog Rath ( † 2012), the couple had six children. Herzogenrath lives as a pensioner and independent curator in Berlin since 2012.

Curatorial work

As director of the Cologne Kunstverein Herzogenrath conceived in 1976, the first European solo exhibition of video art pioneer Nam June Paik. At the design of the Documenta 6 (1977 ), where he was responsible for the video art, and the Documenta 8 (1987 ), he played a key role.

As the main curator of the National Gallery in Berlin Herzogenrath could numerous papers and early works by Marie Jo Lafontaine, Bill Viola, acquire Vostell, Nam June Paik and early works of media art for the museum collection.

At his instance and with the help of the Federal Cultural Foundation was held in 2006, the project 40jahrevideokunst.de held in which 59 historic and current video tapes from 1963 until today, at the same time in five museums, among others in the Kunsthalle Bremen, the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich and the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig were shown.
