Wuvulu Island

Wuvulu ( German outdated: Tiger Island) is an island of the Western Islands of the Bismarck Archipelago. Administratively, the island belongs to the province of Manus in Papua New Guinea.

Geography

Wuvulu is the westernmost island of the Bismarck Archipelago and is located 416 km from the main island of Manus away. The island of New Guinea is located about 260 km to the south. The 14 km ² island of volcanic origin reaches a maximum height of 3 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a coral reef.

Climate

The average temperature is 21 to 35 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall is between 200 and 300 cm. Wuvulu lies outside the zone pacific hurricanes.

Population

The 824 residents of the state of the 2000 census spread over the villages Aunna ( Auna ) in South West ( 396 ) and Onne in North West ( 428). Nutritional basis forms of fishing and subsistence farming. There are cultivated cassava, taro and sweet potatoes.

The island is run from time to time by cruise ships.
