WUWA (Wroclaw)

The Werkbundsiedlung Breslau in 1929, as part of the Werkbund Exhibition apartment and work space ( WUWA ), built as an attempt settlement. The latter had its focus in the settlement, but was supplemented by further presentations at the nearby exhibition grounds around the Centennial Hall and the log Niger park. The organization was responsible for the Silesian Division of the Deutscher Werkbund.

Built in Wrocław's Green Oak settlement is part of a series of Werkbund settlements and can be seen in the context of its immediate predecessor, the Werkbundsiedlung Stuttgart. Contrary to this, only German building, or of local architects have emerged in Breslau.

Development

Unlike in the exhibition in Stuttgart were active in Wroclaw both progressive and conservative architect. However, there were only involved members of the Silesian Department. The driving force behind the exhibition was Heinrich Lauterbach. He pushed for the creation of a Silesian association of the Werkbund and took over with Adolf rading the artistic direction.

The exhibition comprised 37 residential buildings: single family detached, semi-detached and houses, various types of multi-family homes, in addition later degraded 1:1 models of an office building and a farm estate. Adolf rading designed a modern skyscraper, the realization was only four storeys disproportionately due to concerns of the Building Authority under the Director of Town Planning and City Architect Fritz Behrendt. Particularly interesting is the conceived as Einküchenhaus Ledigenheim by Hans Scharoun, the world's one of the first split -level residential buildings. The interiors of the buildings were equipped with objects of the Werkbund members, such as Anna rading, Josef Vinecky and Li Vinecky - Thorn, had been designed. The design of the exhibition had taken John Molzahn.

In contrast to Weißenhofsiedlung recreational green areas were taken into account in the planning and even built a daycare. However, the overall system appears to be chaotic and arbitrary, the arrangement of the buildings randomly and construction engineering and planning errors considerably.

Reusing

After the Second World War, the single-family homes and small multifamily were leased to private parties for a period of 99 years. Through them, the buildings were partially umgestaltetet. A house was demolished in order to create in its place a football field can. This area, however, was transformed in the sequence to the parking lot. The two large multifamily were renovated at the beginning of the 21st century and converted into a hotel and a student residence.

In July 2006, built of wood and several years unused nursery burned down under mysterious circumstances. A few days before that was a request to outline planning permission for the construction of three detached one on the same property with the competent local authority. This, however, was not provided by the property owners. As a result, a method for registration in the monument list has been initiated. Since the entry, regardless of fire became final, the city administration agreed to the reconstruction of the owner. In 2013 it was rebuilt according to original plans.
