Wyatt Eaton

Charles Wyatt Eaton ( born May 6, 1849 in Philipsburg, Quebec, † June 7, 1896 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was a Canadian painter.

Eaton was the son of Jonathan W. Eaton timber merchant, and his wife Mary Smith. In the fall of 1867 Eaton was in New York a student at the " National academy of design" and was taught by, among others Emanuel Leutze. Later, Eaton was a student of Joseph Oriel Eaton (no relation ) with the recommendation of his teacher.

1867 Eaton was instrumental in the founding of the " Society of Canadian artists". In the summer of 1868, he returned to his hometown and settled there as a freelance painter. Two years later, Eaton undertook a study trip to London, which led him in the summer of 1872, even after Paris. In October of the same year a pupil of Jean -Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux -Arts was.

About his teacher Gérôme Eaton also made the acquaintance of Jean -François Millet, who took him with to Barbizon and introduced him to the local art circle. During this time, his friendship with Jules Bastien -Lepage began. On September 24, 1874 Eaton married in Paris Constance Laure Papelard.

1876 ​​Eaton returned with his wife back to Canada and settled in Philipsburg. In January of the following year, the Cooper Union appointed him to their new teachers; next he created some contract work for various magazines; inter alia, "Century Magazine".

Between 1883 and 1884 worked Eaton in France and then returned to Phillipsburg. On February 7, 1886 his wife died and already on 23 July 1887, he married his second wife Charlotte Amelia Collins.

In the years 1892 to 1893 lived and worked Eaton in Montreal, where he not only portrayed prominent contemporaries, but also participated in the founding of "Canadian Artist Association ". The following year, Eaton moved more or less back into private life. One of his last works was a book about his friend Jean -François Millet.

In 1895 he tried to cure his disease with a longer stay. Apparently healed, he returned to London to New York back. At the age of 47 years the painter Wyatt Eaton died on June 7, 1896 in Newport, RI from tuberculosis; the same day as his wife.
