Wycliffe Gordon

Wycliffe Gordon ( * May 29, 1967 in Waynesboro, Georgia ) is an American trombonist, trumpeter, tuba player, singer and didgeridoo players of modern jazz.

Life and work

Wycliffe Gordon is derived from a strict religious family; his father was a church organist, making him musically influenced early on. His early idol was Louis Armstrong. At the beginning of his musical career he has worked with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Jazz Orchestra, dealt with Swing and experimented with new instruments. In his album The Search of 1999, he plays among other things, the didgeridoo, and he also dealt with the gospel music (The Gospel Truth ), by inserting a " trombone " and the work of Thelonious Monk with an interpretation of its composition Ba - Lue Bolivar Ba - Lues - Are. On What You Dealin 'With that Richard Cook & Brian Morton in the Penguin Guide To Jazz called Gordon's best ever work, he played his versions of jazz standards by Duke Ellington ( Cotton Tail ), John Coltrane ( Mr. PC), Dizzy Gillespie and the hard bop classic Blue ' n' Boogie. Currently ( 2012) plays Gordon with his own band consisting of Jon -Erik Kelso (trumpet ), Adrian Cunningham (clarinet / soprano saxophone) and Matt Munisteri ( banjo / guitar).

On his albums he has recorded for the jazz label Nagel Heyer and Criss Cross since 1998, worked with, among others, Eric Reed, Delfeayo Marsalis and Winard Harper.

Gordon also participated in its productions of Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis with ( on the albums Crescent City Christmas Card, 1989, Blood on the Fields, 1994), Marcus Printup, Eric Reed, Randy Sandke, Joe Temperley and Rodney Whitaker.
