Wye (rail)

A reversing triangle (sometimes called arc triangle) in railways is a combination of stretching over three points of contact. Always two of the lines are connected to each of the three points of contact with a switch. The system can be formed by one or more tracks.

Used by one-way vehicles tram networks have a turning triangle or a turning loop.

Interpretation at crossover

With the participation of multi-track routes have to distinguish between

  • Same level of interpretation ( with rides exclusions, but space and cost ) or
  • Level of free interpretation (without rides exclusions, but space-and cost-intensive, with Überwerfung ).

Of these, the performance of the infrastructure depends.

Examples:

  • The lying in Mannheim- Friedrich field reversing triangle Darmstadt / Mannheim / Heidelberg is all double track and designed at the same level except towards Heidelberg. Mannheim Frederick Field -South is a stop on one edge of the wye.
  • The north of Bruchsal lying reversing triangle Heidelberg / Karlsruhe / Stuttgart high-speed railway is only towards Heidelberg level -free and designed single track on the opposite edge, so that consequently the traffic between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart takes place way working.
  • In the bow triangle Werdau three track main paths running at the same level together.

Railway

Track triangles but were created with the railroad in railway depots or train yards. Here, a right angle to the straight track built railway siding about two symmetrical as possible curves was connected usually by a continuous straight track using three switches. This track triangles served the " Apply " especially of a Tender locomotives, which could not be regularly used in the reverse trip in the train service and were therefore needed in the near operation locations at which end or begin trains. Due to the relatively large space requirements are track triangles rare in Germany. With the introduction of hubs in the railway depots track triangles were largely superfluous. An even rarer ( and considerably more complex ) version with the same function are track pentagons whose footprint is between the triangle of track and turntable.

Occasionally ICE trains run in " reverse ranking " because they had to " make head " for example, in a previous redirection. These must then be turned into a large-scale track triangle to stand at the beginning of the next use again properly, eg the ICE 1 on the north-south lines with the first class to the south ( a rotational drive).

In the West Saxons arc triangle Werdau is of national importance for Zwickau and Plauen upper station. The railway line Jiiterbog - Röderau has an arched triangle, the branch at time grove to Dresden and Elsterwerda.

Subway

Even in metros may occur track triangles. The best known in Germany reversing triangle was the same at the U- Bahn Berlin U -Bahn station track triangle.

Tram

As with the three railway lines are connected to each other by a reversing triangle that all driving relationships are possible. Apart from the fully -developed two-pronged track triangles also different variants have been built ( partially or completely single track, both with and without evasion in the legs ).

A special form is the best single-track reversal triangle, which is primarily used for turning vehicles and equipment used either as Zwischenendstelle or represents the path statements. Turning triangles were mostly invested in streets where no turning loop was possible for reasons of space (eg Magdeburg- This village, in 2001 replaced by turning loop ) or caused by dismantling of a track triangle to the closure of a connected there route (eg in Leuna), or. of properties no longer required Wendeschleifen to turn so in exceptional circumstances (accident, etc. ) (Munich, Wettersteinplatz and Circus Krone ). Turning triangles are usually designed so that the tram passes only to them ( 1), then backward ( 2) moves out again into the dead-end track in and then forward ( 3). When the reverse driving the driver controls most of an auxiliary operator's platform at the rear of the train or it will need a shunter.

For construction with stretch interruption track triangles and provisionally erected turning triangles also be used as a turning possibilities for establishment cart.

After previously turning triangles have been progressively reduced or taken out of service (eg, in Augsburg), have been built new in recent years, for example, in Rotterdam and Munich; However, the latter are only used for diversions and the like.

Model Train

In the model railroad operating in the two-rail two-wire system (see also the model railway drive systems ) can single-track lines at a railway triangle, as well as in the terminal loops, can be realized only with additional circuitry. Otherwise, the two conductors, so the two rails together crosswise and there is a short circuit. For analog control of this problem is most easily achieved by a track portion electrically isolated from the other tracks, and is supplied with power via a pole-changing switch. Polarity switch cause a short stop of the train. The isolated track section can also be powered via diodes with power. A stop may be avoided when the diodes are switched as a rectifier ( Graetz circuit ), and when driving of the track section on the transformer, the direction is changed. When changing the direction of travel is forgotten on the transformer, there is a short circuit. More complex solutions using relays or electronic circuits. With digital control, the manufacturer so-called " reverse loop modules " offer. Such a loop module provides an electrically isolated from the other tracks section.
