History

IJlst already received city rights in 1268. It was at that time at the riverside or Ee Ye, which culminated in the Zuider Zee. The canal in the city center is a remnant of this watercourse. In 1865 the company moved here Nooitgedagt ( German: Never thought ) to. This company was famous throughout the Netherlands because of its planing and other carpenter equipment of the highest quality, wooden toys and especially skates. It was taken over by a foreign rivals in 1995 and went bankrupt a few years later. The skates the company Nooitgedagt called Friese doorlopers, consist of a wooden structure, under which the iron of the skate is mounted. The company's products are on display in a former factory building in the IJlster downtown in a small museum.

In 1984, the then local government reform in the Netherlands was created as part of the merger with numerous previously independent villages neighboring the new community Wymbritseradiel. This in turn went in 2011 to the new greater community Súdwest Fryslân.

IJlst is one of the Frisian Eleven Cities (see: elfstedentocht ).

Heeg was in the 19th century known for its eel fishermen. They had even then its own sales system in London on the Thames.

Many of the small villages are situated on a mound, here called terp in Fryslân. Some of them were settled before the year 400 of farmers. However, most villages emerged in the Middle Ages.
