Wyna River

Wyna in Suhr just before its confluence with the Suhre

The Wyna is a 32 km long river in the Swiss cantons of Lucerne and Aargau. It runs on almost its entire length in the south-north direction. The major resorts in Wynental are Menziken, Reinach and Graenichen. The y is the usual spoken in Swiss German as a long i.

The river begins north of Neudorf at an altitude of 660 meters; there unite several short headwaters. After about seven kilometers the cantonal border is crossed between Beromunster and Menziken. North of Suhr opens the Wyna at an altitude of 385 meters in the Suhre; this in turn leads three kilometers further north in the river Aare.

The Wyna flows most freely and has in places a twisty course on. Some important sections have been straightened to prevent flooding. It is at the headwaters at Neudorf (3 km), passing through the villages of Reinach and Menziken (2.5 km), the Gontenschwiler Moos ( a former swamp area 3 km away ) and the section between Unterkulm and Teufenthal (2 km ).
