History

The first inhabitants of the area around Wyomissing were Indians of the tribe of the Lenni Lenape (Delaware), who lived on the banks of the Wyomissing Creek. It is believed that the name " Wyomissing " comes from the language of these Indians, the meaning remains unclear.

In 1896 the present Wyomissing began to take shape, as the timber merchant Thomas P. Merritt from Reading acquired six hundred acres of land. In the same year opened the German immigrants Ferdinand Thun and Henry Janssen Textilmaschinenfabrik Thun & Janssen in Wyomissing. Due to the agricultural and industrial development, the settlement gained in size, which led to the founding of the church Wyomissing on July 2, 1906. The council first met on September 14, 1906 and elected Ferdinand Thun as its President.

In recent decades, mainly residential and commercial areas are built on the former agricultural areas of the community. The management of the last farmland was abandoned in the early 1990s in favor of the development of the business park. In January 2002, the neighboring Wyomissing Hills was incorporated into the municipality of Wyomissing. The population grew from 8,587 to Wyomissings 11,155 based on the results of the census of 2000.
