X (American band)

X is the name of an American punk rock band, founded in Los Angeles in 1977.

History

X was founded in 1977 in Los Angeles Exene Cervenka of (actually Christine Cervenka ) ( vocals), John Doe (actually John Nommensen Duchac ) (bass, vocals), Billy Zoom (actually Tyson Kindell ) (guitar ) and DJ Bonebrake ( drums). The keyboardist of The Doors, Ray Manzarek, discovered in 1980 and produced their debut album Los Angeles, which was a minor hit in the Californian music scene. Was also well-received follow-up album Wild Gift (1981 ), it was declared by Rolling Stone Magazine as album of the year. Their first albums that were released on the independent label Slash Records, had a very driving rock -and- roll sound reminiscent of rockabilly.

1982 X signed the Major Elektra a record deal to release Under The Big Black Sun. The band's sound had now changed somewhat in the direction of Country, but it was still loud and fast. Cervenka and Doe, who were now married, now also made careers in other fields. Exene Cervenka appeared as a writer ( among other things with Lydia Lunch ) and spoken word performances in appearance; John Doe was seen as an actor in films like Great Balls Of Fire. In 1983 the album More Fun In The New World, which had a radiotauglicheren sound.

In 1985, X without Billy Zoom, but with his friend, guitarist Dave Alvin and bassist Johnny Ray Bartel, as The Knitters, the country and folk album Poor Little Critter In The Road to. 1986 appeared not Love Grand, which again had a harder sound than the previous albums. After the recordings, Billy Zoom got out of the band and was replaced first by Dave Alvin and a little later by Tony Gilkyson. In the same year also appeared in a documentary about X, called The Unheard Music.

With this lineup the band took yet on an album and a live album, but after a tour in 1989 put a pause. During this time, the marriage of Cervenka and Doe was divorced and both released solo albums. When shooting Cervenka 1987 Viggo Mortensen met; the two were subsequently married 11 years and have a son from this marriage, Henry Blake Mortensen. Doe moved in his solo work more on country music and had next to Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz a role in the independent film Roadside Prophets and stepped on, inter alia, in the series Roswell.

In 1993, the band found in original line-up back together for recordings and released the album Hey Zeus!, But which left no great impression in the music press. Sporadic give X Concerts and have several live albums released, including 2005 Live In Los Angeles, a recording of a concert on the occasion of the anniversary of the 25th anniversary of their debut album Los Angeles.
