X.500
The X.500 standard of the ITU -T is a term used in computer technology, he describes the structure of a directory service. In this directory can be accessed globally. There is no complete implementation of X.500, since the standard is very comprehensive and touches on an ISO / OSI stack, which made it difficult to implement and computationally intensive and thus prevented a hit. A generic directory service based on X.500 had developed in the early 1990s between universities and research institutions and is still in use.
The X.509 standard for a cryptographic public key infrastructure, which was originally based on X.500, achieved a wide circulation. A common protocol based on X.500, but does not meet all of its requirements, LDAP is.
