Province

Xai -Xai ( Portuguese pronunciation [ ʃai ʃai ] until 1975 João Belo or Vila de Joao Belo ) is the provincial capital of the southern Mozambican province of Gaza.

Geography

The city is located in the district of Xai- Xai on the main coastal road EN1 between the almost 200 kilometers away in the state capital Maputo and the northern Inhambane. In Xai- Xai the Limpopo River flows into the Indian Ocean.

Population

Xai-Xai has 116 343 inhabitants ( 2007).

History

In February 2000, the city was hit hard by a flood of Limpopo. Some of the water was three feet high.

Economy

In the Portuguese colonial era, the city developed, inter alia, through the processing of crops in the area cashews and peanuts. The plane is in the Xai -Xai, is used for rice cultivation.
