The Sargasso triggerfish ( Xanthichthys ringens ) is a species of the family triggerfish ( Balistidae ).

Dissemination

He lives in the western Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina on the Bermuda and the Lesser Antilles to the coast of Brazil on outer reefs, at depths of 30 to 100 meters. Young fish live under drifting Sargassum seaweeds.

Identification

The three cheek-stripe from snout to the gill openings and numerous dark dots which are arranged in rows along edges that are the hallmark of up to 25 centimeters long fish. Like all species of the genus Xanthichthys has the Sargasso triggerfish, a prominent chin. It feeds mainly on crustaceans and sea urchins.
