Xarel·lo

Xarel · lo is a white grape variety from Catalonia. Your main growing area is located there in the DO Penedès. Under the name of Pansa Blanca it has in the D.O. Alella widespread. Other notable areas are located in Aragon and the Balearic Islands. Xarel · lo is cultivated on a total of 9800 ha ( 1999). In the D.O. Alella there is also a red version with the name Panza Rosado, or Pansa Vermella. In Catalonia it is used with the two varieties Parellada and Macabeo as the basis for the sparkling wine Cava.

The variety is early maturing and has a predominantly vegetales, the cabbage -like flavor. The wines show great body and good acidity, but also rustic character. Wines from Xarel · lo are also suitable for aging in oak barrels.

There is a presumption that Xarel · lo is identical to Avesso from the northern Portuguese wine region of Vinho Verde. This also applies to the grape variety Doradillo that is used in Australia and South Africa as a synonym for Jaén Blanco. You probably comes from Spain, but is no longer grown there under that name. From Doradillo table wines and base wines are mainly produced for distillation.
