XCF (file format)

In an XCF file text blocks, paths and levels can be stored without loss, which makes it comparable to the PSD or PSPImages format of Adobe Photoshop or Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo. The layers can be stored with 8 bits per color channel in RGB color space and 8 bit in the transparency channel. So far, can be achieved with PSD files a much greater color accuracy by 32 -bit color channels, a higher color depth for GIMP is already contained in planning. GIMP also supports a transparent compression of its file format; implemented are the bzip2 compression algorithms and gz, the compressed files will then have the extensions. xcf.bz2 and. xcf.gz.

Support outside of GIMP

XCF is fully supported by the following programs:

  • Seashore, a GIMP -based Mac OS X image processing
  • CinePaint, a GIMP Fork

Other programs can still read XCF, but even that only with more or less success:

  • DBGallery
  • ImageMagick has a XCF module
  • Project Dogwaffle
  • Krita uses GraphicsMagick for XCF Support
  • KolourPaint, the XCF format using the KDE graphics plugins, like any other KDE graphics program read.
  • ShowImg
  • Gwenview
  • Gimageview
  • Digikam
  • Imagine
  • XnView
  • Inkscape supports the XCF export since v0.44.
  • Xcftools, a collection of software for manipulating XCFs.
  • IrfanView can display XCF images ( composite image and individual levels )
  • Paint.NET can load and save images XCF (via ImXCF.FileType plugin). Also, the packed formats xcfgz. , And. Xcfbz2 are supported.
