The Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University (Chinese西 交 利物浦 大学, Pinyin Xi'an Jiaotong Daxue Lìwùpǔ, short form: XJTLU ) is a company founded in 2006 Sino- British University in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province of the People's Republic of China. At the University of innovative teaching approaches are being developed that combine Chinese and Western methods, and to give impetus to the reform of the Chinese higher education institutions. The language of instruction is English.

Foundation

The University of Liverpool and Xi'an Jiaotong University, signed on 28 September 2004, a cooperation agreement to form a new, independent from the two founders of the university. Emergence should be a natural and engineering sciences university with an additional emphasis in English. The University is established as a private university whose owners are the University of Liverpool and Xi'an Jiaotong University.

The name Jiaotong respectively Jiao Tong is the transcription of the Chinese word交通( pinyin: Jiaotong; Wade- Giles: ChiaoTung ). This word means about traffic, transportation, or communication ( something that connects ) and in several cases, part of the Chinese University of names in which it usually remains untranslated.

Construction began in August 2005. Was officially opened the Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University on 29 May 2006. It is the first partnership of senior Chinese and British research universities and is recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education as a nonprofit educational institution.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the University combines design elements of the coat of arms of the University of Liverpool ( eg outline, blue and white color scheme, three stylized birds, each with a leaf in its beak ), with elements of the coat of arms of Xi'an Jiaotong University ( anvil, hammer, books, gear ). The inscription reads: XJTLU 2006.

Campus

The campus is located about 12 km south-east from the historic city center of Suzhou, at the eastern edge of the borough Gusu in Dushu Lake High Education Town ( HET ), which in turn is part of the Suzhou Industrial Park ( SIP). The campus is located about 90 kilometers west of Shanghai, 230 km east from Nanjing and 160km north of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province.

The master plan for the North Campus ( between Ren'ai and Wenjingstraße ) as well as some of the Institute building was designed by the American architectural firm Perkins Will and completed by 2012. The British Asian architecture firm Aedas designed the Administration and Information Center, housed in the parts of the university administration and the University Library, and was completed in August 2013. The cube- shaped building is located on a canal, the ' forms the western boundary of the campus. In contrast to many other universities in southern China, the buildings are air-conditioned throughout the year.

On the South Campus ( between Wenjing and Yifangstraße ) are sports facilities and there are other institute building design and construction to be ready by 2016. North and South Campus are separated by the Wenjingstraße and the accompanying road channel. They are connected by a mall that leads under street and through canal. On the North Campus, the mall expanded to a sunken courtyard, where the student is Enterprise Park University. On the South Campus, the Mall leading to the central square of the campus.

Teaching

At the Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University innovative teaching approaches are being developed that combine Chinese and Western methods, and to give impetus to the reform of the Chinese higher education institutions. The language of instruction is English, most schools a high percentage of international professors who were appointed from now more than 40 countries. The students will receive both a degree from the Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University and a graduate of the University of Liverpool. In the first year 160 undergraduate students were enrolled, today (Autumn 2013), the University has approximately 7,000 students on campus and another 2,000 students at the University of Liverpool. The initial plan is an expansion of the university to a size of approximately 10,000 students.
