Xiangjiaba Dam

The construction of the Xiangjiaba Dam on the border between the provinces of Sichuan ( Yibin ) and Yunnan ( Shuifu ) in China began on 27 November 2006. The dam created at Jinsha Jiang ( " Gold Sand River "), about 1000 kilometers upstream of the famous Three Gorges project and should be completed in 2015. Their main purpose is the generation of electricity from hydropower; for a hydropower plant is provided with 6000 MW. The so- generated electrical energy is transmitted via specially built HVDC Xianjiaba -Shanghai in the 2000 km from the metropolitan area of Shanghai. This is the second project on this river next to the Xiluodu Dam, with one years previously begun. After completion of construction, it will be the third largest hydroelectric power plant in China.

Construction and operation

With the construction of the 161 meter high and 909.26 meters long gravity dam began in 2008. The hydroelectric power plant is being built since 2009. In May 2011 the first turbine impeller was delivered, with the 812 MW can be generated. The impeller is 406 tons, has a diameter of 10.5 meters and a height of 4.7 meters. In July 2012, the first generator units were completed.

Since October 2012, the water is jammed in the dam. Within a week, the water level of 280 meters should rise to 354 meters. The flow of water stabilized at 15,000 cubic meters per second. Just six hours after the start of water storage, the level fell by 4 inches in Three Gorges Reservoir.

With one of the world's longest HVDC overland routes of the power generated by the hydroelectric power plant in the more than 2000 kilometers to Shanghai to be transferred. The line was put into operation in 2010 after 30 months of construction.

Other purposes of the dam are: flood control, irrigation, navigation and retention of sludge and sediment.

The project is expected to cost a total of about 6.3 billion U.S. dollars. The total cost will be 200 billion yuan ( 24 billion euros ), according to FAZ for all four dams.

Effects on human health and the environment

For the reservoir 88000-118000 people should be resettled. The local government gave a figure of 40,100 people for the circle Suijiang. There were six cities in the area where the dam should arise. In March 2012, there were five days of mass protests at the translocations. The inhabitants did not want to sign because they held their lands, their houses are undervalued compensation agreements. About 2,000 people then locked from the main access roads to the district, so it came to food shortages. The first attempt to convince the protesters from a complete dissolution of the blockade failed. Recently, more than 400 police officers were used to move about 300 demonstrators who continue detained an intersection and a bridge to the demolition of the protests. After 5 days, the public order could be restored.

Due to a landslide near the dam, lost in June 2010, more than 250 villagers have built their homes. According to the local authorities of the landslide was due to the construction of a road above the village. However, residents reported that the number and severity of landslides since the start of construction of the dam have increased significantly.
