Xiaoyong Chen

Chen Xiaoyong ( born May 13, 1955 in Beijing) is a Chinese composer.

Chen Xiaoyong studied in Beijing, first violin and composition from 1980 to 1985 at the Central Conservatory. Immediately after that, he graduated to 1989 postgraduate studies with György Ligeti at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Hamburg. Chen Xiaoyong received 1993 Christoph and Stephan Kaske Prize in Munich and in 1995, the Bach Prize Fellowship from the City of Hamburg. Guest professorships led him constantly since 1997, according to Taiwan, Hong Kong and the PRC. Chen is a lecturer at the Asia - Africa - Institute of the University of Hamburg since 1987 and lives as a freelance composer in Hamburg.

Chen Xiaoyong is very close in its composition, the East Asian philosophy, in which the intrinsic value of things and the sound a lot more attention is being paid as in Western thought. It is not important to the scope of the musical material used, but the development of new sensitive and unexpected means to allow the listener experiencing a deep of the sound. Chen's music is also very strongly associated with characteristics of Chinese language and music, which is reflected in its subtle melody: the smallest changes, time stretching, interval spreads and differentiated differences in the dynamics characterize his compositions. However, Chen writes neither a Chinese nor a purely European music. Although he also refers to the Chinese musical tradition - eg awakened but this is not the impression of ethnic ingredients - by using the Chinese zither Zheng.

His European debut as a composer Chen celebrated in 1987 at the Donaueschingen Music Festival with the premiere of the 1st STRING QUARTET by the Auryn Quartet. 1992 Chen received the composition prize of the Forum of Young Composers WDR for his composition " Yuen " for soprano and 11 instrumentalists, which premiered under Peter Eötvös with the Ensemble Modern in Cologne. The German Chamber Philharmonic in 1999 produced in cooperation with Radio Bremen, the portrait CD Invisible Landscapes. Also in 1999 he wrote on behalf of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the orchestral work INTERLACED LANDSCAPES, which on a tour of China and Portugal experienced seven performances with the Gulbenkian Orchestra under Muhai Tang. In 2000, the composition FUSION for ensemble commissioned by the cellist Yo -Yo Ma for his Silk Road Project was born. In June 2002, the composition XI FUSION III was premiered for ensemble as an order of the Asia - Africa - Institute of the University of Hamburg.
