Xinhua zidian

The Xinhua Dictionary (Chinese新华 字典/新华 字典, Pinyin Xinhua Zìdiǎn, in English often Xinhua Dictionary or New China Dictionary) is a monolingual Chinese dictionary comparable to the dictionary or the Wahrig in the German language area.

In the spring of 2004, the number of copies sold had risen to more than 400 million, so the dictionary the best selling in the world was. It is published by Commercial Press. Strictly speaking, it is a character dictionary, because it is not broken down by one or polysyllabic words, but by character, strictly speaking, in the alphabetical order of Chinese Lateinumschrift ( of Hanyu Pinyin). The formed with the characters common Chinese words and phrases are dealt with under the individual lemmas of the characters.

It is very common both within the country and outside China. The dictionary uses simplified characters and the phonetic transcription after the Chinese Lateinumschrift scheme. In addition to the pinyin ( with tones ) pronunciation of each character in Bopomofo is specified, but individually only in the lemma.

10th edition

The 10th edition of the dictionary was published in 2004. Including the traditional Chinese characters and spelling variations of different characters are the more than 11,200 characters included.

  • Listed by the radicals and increasing pulse number overview of the various characters ( some subsequently an overview in the radical system difficult to classify characters ).

The first Xinhua zidian was published in 1953, published by the People's Education Press under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The chief editor was the linguist and Lexikologe Wei Jiangong (魏建功, 1901-1980 ). In 1957, the Commercial Press published the first edition in alphabetical order with Pinyin. It has been reprinted several times since then and enjoys a high popularity.

11th edition

The 11th edition of the Xinhua zidian appeared in 2011. Has the ISBN 978-7-100-06959-5.

Criticism

Chen Ding Xiang to have numbered 23,854 errors in Xinhua Dictionary.

Apart from the short dictionary is in the Commercial Press and the character dictionary Bilingual Chinese- English Xinhua Dictionary (English Subtitles: Xinhua Dictionary with English Translation ) published with English translation ( Yao 2000, review of Clark 2001).

A Pinyin edition of the Xinhua zidian (Xinhua Hanyu pinyin zidian ban ) gives the additional explanations in Pinyin (the Pinyinisierung was with in to words / terms, aggregated together letters)
