Xizhi District

Xizhi, also Hsichih or Sijhih (Chinese汐止 区, pinyin Xīzhǐ Qū, Tongyong Pinyin Sijhǐh Cyu, W.-G. Hsi -chih Chu ) is a district of the city of New Taipei in northern Taiwan with about 190,000 inhabitants. Until the founding of New Taipei in December 2010 Xizhi was a separate town in Taipei County.

Location

Xizhi is located on the Keelung River between the capital Taipei and Keelung City in the west to the east. Neighboring districts in New Taipei Shiding in the south, Pingxi in the southeast and Wanli in the northwest. The center Xizhis located along the current flowing from east to west Keelung River is densely built-up, while the district in the north and south is a large part of wooded hills and the rich in the North West in the Yangmingshan Mountains into it.

Through the valley of the Keelung River lead the main thoroughfares between Taipei and Keelung. Xizhi is located on the highways 1 and 3 and on the main line of the Taiwan Railway, which each lead of Keelung on Taiwan's Taipei at the metropolitan West. A connection to the metro network of Taipei is planned.

History

The valley of the Keelung River was originally inhabited by indigenous people of the Ketagalan. Mid-18th century Chinese settlers reached the region. They called the place that became an important ferry port, Shui Jiao Fan (水 返 脚, literally " The rise of the flood ends here " ), since the influence of the tide reached up to this point. During the Japanese rule over Taiwan, the place in 1920 in Xizhi (Japaneseし おとめ, Shiotome, "End of Tides ") was renamed. After 1945, under the Republic of China, the population Xizhis due to the proximity to the capital, Taipei grew rapidly in 1999 was awarded the official status of the community of a large city (市, Shì ). On 25 December 2010, the city lost its independence and became part of the products resulting from the district of Taipei metropolis of New Taipei.
