Xlendi

Xlendi is a small town in the southwestern part of the island of Gozo in Malta. He belongs to the municipality of Munxar and therefore has no own coat of arms.

Location

The village is located about three kilometers south-east of Victoria, cut to an approximately 500 yards in the country, fjord -like bay, which is about 70 meters wide at its narrowest point. At the end of the bay is a sandy beach with a small promenade. On both sides of the bay covered rocks partly steeply into the sea. From Victoria and Sannat the roads to Xlendi.

History

The first written mention of the village took place on 19 April 1550 under the name " Xilendi " instead. Even the Romans use the port of Xlendi because it offered protection in bad weather. In the middle of the bay is a reef, the numerous Roman ships fell victim to. Today it lives in the former fishing village mainly from tourism.

After the location of the asteroid ( 55082 ) Xlendi was named in 2004.

Attractions

  • The Church of Xlendi is dedicated to the Holy Virgin of Mount Carmel. The facade dates from 1868, the rear part was expanded in 1969. In 1974, the church was rededicated.
  • A white statue of St.. Andrew, the patron saint of fishermen, stands above the harbor.
  • At the beginning of the bay is situated on a rock of the Xlendi Tower, which was built in 1650. He is now the oldest free-standing watchtower on the island of Gozo.
  • A narrow path leads to the northern side of the bay from the village to Caroline Cave, a small cave that once Caroline Cauchi, a wealthy woman from Victoria belonged.
  • The Catherine of Siena cave is located on the north side, outside the bay. It bears your name after Saint Catherine of Siena.
  • Xlendi is especially popular with scuba divers, there are several diving schools.
