Xuanwu District, Beijing

Xuanwu (Chinese宣武区, Pinyin Xuānwǔ Qū ) was a district of the Chinese capital Beijing with 550,000 inhabitants. On 1 July 2010, it was disbanded and integrated its area in the city of Xicheng District.

Xuanwu lay southwest of the city center ( Tiananmen), was 16.5 km ² and was the second smallest by Chongwen district of the historic city.

Although, or perhaps because the district had a checkered history of development behind it, embracing changes took place. Many of the original hutongs were demolished, not least in preparation for the Olympic Summer Games 2008.

In Xuanwu there was the Temple of Heaven.
