Ya'akov Meshorer

Ya ʿ akov Meshorer ( born August 14, 1935 in Jerusalem, † June 23, 2004 ) was an Israeli numismatist and archaeologist Classic. He was instrumental in the establishment of numismatics as an academic subject in Israel.

Ya'akov Meshorers interest in antiquity and in particular to the Ancient Numismatics was laid in childhood, as he often found coins outside of Jerusalem. After his two years of military service he joined in 1956 in the kibbutz Hatzerim one. Here he devoted himself increasingly to his numismatic hobby and built a small museum. In 1960 he began his studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which, according to the already acquired Bachelor's degree in archeology graduated in 1966 with a Master degree in archeology and Jewish history. During the Six-Day War, he served in the Israeli military and was injured in the fighting. Later he was a liaison officer with the UN troops. In 1969 he was curator of the numismatic collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and remained in this position until 1993. At university he was in 1971 his doctorate with a numismatic work. From 1975 to 1982 and again from 1990 to 1996 he was chief curator of the archaeological collection of the museum. Meshorer 1983 was additionally appointed as Professor of Numismatics at the Hebrew University. In 2000 he retired. He died at the age of 69 years, after he had fought six years against cancer.

Meshorers research focus was the study of the coins of Palestine and its neighboring regions. He was the one who has the coins of Palestine for the first time systematically opened, edited and compiled several corpora and thus made ​​a larger group of users accessible. He has published 19 monographs and more than 100 essays. As a member of the Board of the Israel Society for Medal and coins he could use his skills also in the design of the new modern coins of the Israeli state. He was a driving force to orientate the modern coins of the Israeli state to antique models, which is a direct daily service between modernity and history was made. In the Archaeological Council of the Israel Antiquities Authority, he was also active for the Israeli Archaeological Excavation. For his book A Treasury of Jewish Coins From the Persian Period to Bar Kochba, he was awarded in 2003 with the Irene Levi- Sala Book Prize in Archaeology of Israel.
