Yagodnoye, Magadan Oblast

Yagodnoye (Russian Ягодное ) is an urban-type settlement in Magadan Oblast (Russia) with 4210 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the southeastern part of this area about 1000 m high Tscherskigebirges on the left bank of the left Kolyma inflow Debin. It is located about 340 kilometers in a straight line in a north north west from Oblastverwaltungszentrum Magadan.

Yagodnoye is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons Yagodnoye.

History

The village was founded in 1934 in connection with the construction of Kolymatrasse, a road from Magadan to Ust- Nera, and the development of gold mining in the area. The name is derived from the Russian word for jagoda berry. From 1949 to 1957 was in Yagodnoye the management of the Northern bearing ( SewLag ), a penal camp of Dalstroy management system of the Gulag with up to 15,800 prisoners who were employed in mining and road construction and forestry.

1953 Yagodnoye was also awarded with the establishment of Rajons the status of an urban-type settlement.

Culture, Education and sights

In 1991, a memorial to the victims of Stalin's repression was the 1920s to the 1950s built in Yagodnoye 1994 an associated museum.

Economy and infrastructure

Local visual industry is the gold mining industry, which is however almost come to a standstill since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Other operations, such as the building materials industry and the food supply were closed, resulting in the mass exodus of the population.

Yagodnoye is located on the highway M56, as the Kolymatrasse now officially known, and is located at about 550 km from this Magadan. In Yagodnoye a road branches off to the (former) mining centers Werchni At- Urjach (35 km) and Elgen.
