Yakima ( to 1918 North Yakima ) is a city in central Washington and the seat of Yakima County.

It has 81 214 inhabitants ( 2005) and is situated in the Yakima Valley. The name comes from the indigenous people of the Yakima, still today, the Yakama Indian Reservation Indian Reservation is located in the south / south-west of Yakima.

The city has an area of 53.4 km ². Major industries are fruit growing, in particular the cultivation of wine (see Yakima Valley AVA).

The military maintains military training areas and ammunition dumps in the area. The NSA operates the Yakima Research Station.
