Yakoruda

Jakoruda (Bulgarian: Якоруда ) is a town in southwestern Bulgaria. The city is located in Blagoevgrad Province, and is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality Jakoruda. The city is located in the Rhodope Mountains, the river Nestos, 26 km west of the town of Velingrad. The village Jakoruda was appointed on 9 September 1964 on the city.

The majority of the population is Muslim by Jakoruda according to their faith, a decreasing proportion of them are Orthodox.

Policy

During the local elections in 2007 in Bulgaria, 17 selected officials of the local parliaments were elected, 11 of which are members of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, three of the Agricultural Union Party and three of another party. The current mayor of Jakoruda is the former engineer Nuredin Kafelow.

History

The village Jakoruda arose from a settlement of Thracians. After Ottoman rule, the village was in the fields of infrastructure badly damaged and cut off from the outside world.
