Yakovlev AIR-1

The Yakovlev Yes -1 Awijetka (Russian Яковлев Я -1 Авиетка also: AIR -1, АИР -1) was a Soviet biplane aircraft. She was the first built by Alexander Yakovlev engine aircraft and was manufactured as a single copy.

Development

Yakovlev, in a working group of the Military Academy was the Air Force at that time engine-minder, dealt in passing with design problems in aircraft. After intercession of aerodynamicist Vladimir Pyschnow him approved for the construction and development of the Management Board of Ossoawiachim funds. The work began in 1926 and eight months later launched Julian Piontkowski on 12 May 1927 First successful flight.

The machine was stable and easy to fly. The testing included a cross-country flight Moscow - Kharkov - Sevastopol - Moscow from Piontkowski and Yakovlev. They covered a distance 1420 km in 15 hours and 30 minutes, which was a speed and distance world record for light aircraft. In response to the successful construction Yakovlev was appointed as a design engineer in the Academy of the Air Force. The abbreviation AIR also used refers to the politician Alexei Ivanovich Rykov.

Description

The Yes - 1 was a lightweight design with a wooden frame and fabric covering, in the bow area was the planking of plywood. The wing connected by I- sticks together and to the body, the structure was also clamped. The chassis was rigid with through axle and tail skid at the rear.
