Yakult

Yakult (JapaneseヤクルトYakuruto ) is a probiotic drink on the basis of skimmed milk and a special strain of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei Shirota ).

Was developed the drink by the Japanese physician and scientist Minoru Shirota. In 1935, he led the drink Yakult one on the Japanese market, and in 1938 it was registered as a trademark. In 1955 his company was as K. K. Yakult Honsha (株式会社 ヤクルト 本社Kabushiki - gaisha Yakuruto Honsha ) registered.

Today, the company sells its products in 31 countries. Since 1971, even cosmetics are produced since 1975 and pharmaceuticals, but these are mainly available in the Asian market.

The company is also since 1970, owner and namesake of the professional baseball team Yakult Swallows Tōkyō (formerly Yakult Atoms ), usually abbreviated as Yakult.

For the European market Yakult is manufactured in Almere (Netherlands ), where the production capacity of 10 million bottles per week.

History

The Japanese physician and scientist Minoru Shirota research in the 30s on the subject of lactic acid bacteria and discovered later named after him, lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus casei Shirota. In 1935, he developed from it the drink Yakult. The name is derived from Yakult " jahurto ", the Esperanto word for yogurt.

1938 Yakult was registered as a trademark. The Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. was founded in 1955 as a limited company registered in the commercial register.

From 1964 to 1979 Yakult first expanded to other Asian countries (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Philippines, Singapore). It was followed by other Asian and some Latin American countries. From 1994 to 2000 established Yakult in 9 European countries, starting with the Netherlands. 1996 Yakult was introduced in Germany, since 2005 it is available in Austria. As of 2002, Yakult opened several production sites and offices in the People's Republic of China. Since 2007, Yakult is marketed in the United States.

Products

Core product of the company is the drink Yakult, which has been around for over 75 years. In Europe it is called " Yakult Original" (red) and a reduced-calorie " Yakult Light" (blue ) are offered. Yakult is a fermented beverage on the basis of skimmed milk. It contains lactic acid bacteria of the strain Lactobacillus casei Shirota. From scientific studies have shown that these reach the intestines alive. The company guarantees that a cool bottle of Yakult contains mounted to the expiration date at least 6.5 billion Lactobacillus casei Shirota.

In Asia and South America also produces more Yakult fermented milk and yogurt products with the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus casei Shirota or with Bifidobacterium breve Yakult. There are also various functional beverages eg with gamma -aminobutyric acid or polyphenols.
