Yallahs, also written Yallahs Bay or Yallahs Village, is a small town on the southeastern coast of Jamaica. It is located in the County of Surrey, in the Parish of Saint Thomas. Yallahs is the 22 - largest city on the island. 2010, the population was 7,653 people. The city is located 0 meters above the sea level. About three miles from Yallahs away is the District of Heartsease. In this tiny town is home to a religious sect that dresses with wide robes and colorful scarves around the head. In their ceremonies they dance themselves to hypnotic rhythmic drum music, in a trance.

History

Yallahs was founded in the late 16th century. The origin of its name is uncertain. The safest sources say that the city was named after a privateer captain named Captain Yallahs who has lived in this region to 1671, named. In 1692, a strong earthquake shook the region. The Twin Bay Salt Ponds and associated lakes originated.

Geography and economy

North of the city lie the Twin Salt Ponds. The sea water contained therein has a 15 times higher salinity than the Atlantic. The salt obtained there is an important commodity and makes the city the largest salt supplier to the island. The air around this bay and their individual ponds is rich in hydrogen sulfide. This is caused by bacteria that live in the salt ponds. In 1902 it was reported that one could perceive the smell of sulfur to the capital, Kingston.

The bay forms a from the mainland, on the other hand from a caused by the earthquake headland named Yallahs Pond. There is a large bird sanctuary. West of Yallahs flows river of the same Yallahs River into the Atlantic.
