Yama-dera

The Buddhist temple Ryūshaku -ji (Japanese立 石 寺), also Risshaku -ji, also popularly known as Yama -dera (山寺, " Mountain Temple " ) is called in Yamagata Prefecture on the way from Yamagata to Sendai. Famous is the 860 AD, founded by the high priest Ennin Buddhist mountain temple through the mountains with the bizarre rocks and the scattered temples. There is a picturesque landscape, especially in autumn impressed the foliage.

The great haiku poet Matsuo Bashō visited the temple and was thrilled. Yamadera had a strong influence on Basho's Oku no work hosomichi.
