Yamazaki Sōkan

Sokan Yamazaki (Japanese山崎 宗 鉴; * um 1465 in the province of Ōmi (now Shiga Prefecture ); † around 1552 ) was a Japanese haikai poet.

Yamazaki sokan is his Dichterpseudonym, where the last name is Yamazaki (now Kyoto Prefecture) borrowed from the same place in the province of Yamashiro in which he lived. His real name was Shina Norishige (志 那 范 重), called Yasaburō (弥 三郎).

Little is known about the circumstances of Yamazaki. He was in the service of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshihisa, and after his death in 1489 was a monk. Contrary to traditions about his eccentric lifestyle he earned his living probably as a teacher and calligrapher.

A collection of haikai that arose in the course of several years, was not published until 1615, one hundred years after its completion, under the title Shinsen inu Tsukuba shū.
