Yan Nawa District

Yan Nawa ( Thai ยานนาวา, also: Yannawa ) is one of the 50 districts (Khet ) of Bangkok, capital of Thailand. Yan Nawa is a southern city district and is located on the eastern shore of the southern loop of the Chao Phraya River.

Geography

The neighboring districts are from clockwise from the north: Sathon, Khlong Toei, Phra Pradaeng Samut Prakan province and Rat Burana (both on the opposite bank of Chao Phraya River ) and Bang Kho Laem.

History

Yan Nawa was called in the past Ban Tavoy ( Dawei Village, in Thai บ้าน ทวาย ) or Ban Kok Khwai (water buffalo -pin village in Thai บ้าน คอก ควาย ), since a large number of residents from the city of Tavoy came, the often their water buffalo to the market for sale exaggerated. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ), it was to Amphoe Ban Tavoy. Later it was renamed again in Amphoe Yan Nawa in accordance with the renaming of Wat Ban Tavoy in Wat Yan Nawa. In 1972, Yan Nawa was a Khet (district), today Kwaeng were created in 1975. On 9 November 1989 was established from parts of Yan Nawa two new districts, namely, Sathon, and Bang Kho Laem. Wat Yan Nawa, the temple ( wat ), which provided the name of the district, is now for Khet Sathorn.

The name of the town is home to Wat Chakrawat points to an old place, the south of the town Bangkok was in the thirties of the 19th century and ended in the city walls.
