Yancey County, North Carolina

Yancey County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Burnsville.

Geography

The County is located in western North Carolina, adjacent to Tennessee and has an area of 811 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mitchell County, McDowell County, Buncombe County and Madison County.

Yancey County is divided into eleven townships: Brush Creek, Burnsville, Cane River, Crabtree, Egypt, Green Mountain, Jacks Creek, Pensacola, Price's Creek, Ramseytown and South Toe.

History

Yancey County was formed in 1833 from parts of Burke County and Buncombe County. It was named for Bartlett Yancey, a member of the U.S. Congress.
