Yandi Mine

The Yandi mine is located an iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, 90 kilometers west of Newman. The mine should not be confused with the nearby Yandicoogina mine of Rio Tinto Group, which is also called short Yandi.

Economic data

Major shareholder of the mine is at 85 %, the BHP Billiton, which operates seven mines in the Pilbara region. BHP Billiton also operates two iron ore shipping facilities at Port Hedland, Nelson Point and Finucane on Iceland and over 1,000 kilometers of rail lines to transport ore.

BHP Billiton is the second largest iron ore mine operators in the Pilbara, while Fortescue Metals Group occupies the third place after Rio Tinto. In 2010, BHP 8,000 people in the production of iron ore in the region.

History

The first iron ore mine, which began operations in the Pilbara region was the Goldsworthy mine in 1965. The produced iron ore was transported to the Goldsworthy Railway to the port facilities at Finucane Iceland and loaded onto ships. On 1 June 1966, the first shipload of Australian iron ore left aboard the Harvey S. Mudd this port.

Mining activity began in Yandi 1991 and the first shipment of iron ore was produced in 1992. The production facility was renewed from 1994 to 2003 and has an annual capacity of 41 million tonnes of iron ore. The system consists of a crusher, two production and two train - loading stations.

After two fatal accidents at work in the Yandi Mine in September 2008 BHP closed the mine for 10 days to assess occupational safety and let all other of their iron ore mines in the Pilbara region check.
