Yang Lian

Yang Lian (Chinese杨炼, Pinyin Yáng Lian, born February 22, 1955 in Bern ) is a Chinese poet and member of the Chinese poet group Obscure Poetry (朦胧诗/朦胧诗, Menglong Shī, English Misty Poets ).

Life and work

Yang Lian was born in Switzerland and grew up in Beijing, where he attended primary school. During the Cultural Revolution, in 1974, Yang Lian has been sent to the country to participate in the program " re-education through labor." Here he began his first poems in classical Chinese style compose. 1977, after the death of Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, Yang Lian returned to Beijing and worked for the state broadcaster.

In 1979 he joined a group of poets to which published the magazine " JINTIAN ," Yang Lian here developed a more modern, experimental writing style. The poems of " JINTIAN " group made ​​for a lot of political controversy, as was formed originally derogatory name meant " Misty Poets ". Yang Lian's poem " Norlang " (Chinese诺 日 朗, Pinyin Nuo rì lǎng ) has been heavily criticized in the " campaign against spiritual pollution " (1983 /84) that he no longer could publish in subsequent years in China.

1986 Yang Lian began to travel abroad. Among other things, he visited Australia and New Zealand. At the time of the Tiananmen Square Massacre he was in Auckland, New Zealand, and participated in the protests against the actions of the Chinese government. Shortly after, his works were set in China on censorship list, and Yang Lian was deprived Chinese citizenship. Subsequently, Yang Lian awarded the New Zealand citizenship and lived from then on until the year 2012 in London. Since the autumn of 2012, he lives with his wife, writer Liu Yoyo, in Berlin and is the official "Fellow" at the local Wisschenschaftskolleg.

Since 2005, Yang Lian artistic director of the "Unique Mother Tongue", a group of Chinese artists that regularly organize cultural events in London.
