Yanko Rusev

Janko Russew ( born December 1, 1958 in Iwanski (Bulgaria), Oblast Shumen, Bulgaria ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter.

Sporting career

Russew dominated during his career, the light weight to 67.5 kg, and the mean weight 75 kg. His first international competition, he played at the World Championships 1977 in Stuttgart in the class up to 60 kg and finished with 277.5 kg in second place.

At the 1978 World Cup in Gettysburg Russew already moved into the light-weight to 67.5 kg, and won his first of five world titles. The following year, he successfully defended his title in Thessaloniki and reached 332.5 kg in first place before Joachim Kunz with 325.0 kg.

At the Olympic Games in 1980, which at the same time represented the World Championships this year, won an Olympic gold medal with 342.5 kg Russew again before Kunz 335.0 kg. Russew raised in pushing a world record with 195.0 kg.

In 1981, Russew then the middleweight division up to 75 kg and could win here at once his fourth World Cup. He scored 360 kg in the total and thus placed himself before the Soviet athlete Alexander Perwi. In 1982, he defended his title again with 365.0 kg ahead of his compatriot Mincho Paschow.

His last world championship contested Russew 1983 again at lightweight to 67.5 kg, and was 337.5 kilograms second behind Joachim Kunz and before Andreas Behm.
