Yannis Stournaras

Giannis Stournaras (Greek Γιάννης Στουρνάρας, also Yannis Stournaras or Ioannis Stournaras transcribed; born December 10, 1956 in Athens ) is Finance Minister of Greece.

Life

Stournaras graduated in 1978 with a degree in economics at the Athens University and then completed a postgraduate course in economic theory and policy at the University of Oxford, where he graduated in 1980 with a Master degree and in 1982 with the promotion. After that, he was until 1986 a researcher and lecturer at St. Catherine 's College and the Institute for Energy Studies, both in Oxford.

From 1994 to July 2000 he was chairman of the advisory board of the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance. He was involved in the design and implementation of the EU convergence programs and represented the Ministry in the EU's Monetary Affairs Committee. As chief economic adviser to Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, he participated in the negotiations on the accession of Greece to the European Economic and Monetary Union ( EMU).

From 1994 to 1997 he was Deputy Chairman of the formerly state-owned gas supplier DEPA ( associated company of Hellenic Petroleum ) and member of the board of the Public Debt Administration ( from 1998 to July 2000).

From July 2000 to March 2004 he was chairman of the formerly state-owned Emporiki Bank and Vice Chairman of the Greek banking Association. During this time, the Emporiki Bank was fundamentally restructured. From 2005 to 2008 he was director of the company Stournaras Kappa Securities, then Director General of the Foundation for Industrial and Economic Research ( IOBE ), a think tank of the National Bank of Greece.

He is Professor of Economics in Athens.

Stournaras held in May and June 2012 as the successor of Anna Diamantopoulou the Office of the Minister for Economic Development, Competition and Maritime ( Economic Affairs ) in the transitional government of Panagiotis Pikrammenos. On June 26, 2012 was Prime Minister Andonis Samaras his appointment as Minister of Finance announced. On 5 July 2012, he was sworn in for this office. The previously appointed to office Vasilis Rapanos not resigned for health reasons after a dizzy spell at the office.
