Yantar, Kaliningrad
Jantar (Russian Янтарь to German Bernstein) is built on the territory of the Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia Special Economic Zone.
1991 lost Kaliningrad through Lithuania's independence the only common border with the Russian motherland. Therefore, politicians have suggested the creation of a special economic zone. It was built by decree of Boris Yeltsin to give better economic development prospects to the exclave. However, it was shortly after the foundation, also from Boris Yeltsin, deprived of nearly all the skills again, since the former Moscow government feared separatism. Due to this policy, the development of the Special Economic Zone has so far been rather unsuccessful. Only the watch industry has yet been able to develop some importance.
