Yarn

Yarn ( colloquially known in animal origin even wool) is in accordance with DIN 60900, a collective term for all linear textile structures. After a yarn is mutatis mutandis a long, thin structure of one or more fibers. It is a textile intermediate, which can be woven into fabrics, knitted fabrics and embroidery and is also used for sewing.

Species

After construction of the yarns ( yarn construction )

  • Single yarns
  • Plied yarns ( consisting of two or more parallel coiled, not twisted together yarns )
  • Multiple or cabled yarns ( yarns )
  • Core yarn (staple fibers with a filament core )

After the spinning process used

  • Dry-spun yarns ( dry spinning process / mechanical spinning process )

After fiber type two types of yarn

  • Staple. consists of finite-length fibers. By turning ( yarn twist ) more fibers during spinning produces a thread of any length. Depending on the raw material, a distinction between short - and Langstapelfasergarn.
  • Filament yarn. consists of theoretically infinitely long fibers called filaments. Filament must not be twisted, the coherence of the individual can also be given by turbulence. There are smooth and textured filament yarns. Monofilaments consist of a filament, Minifilgarne consist of two to five individual fibers and multifilament yarns consist of many individual fibers.

By areas of the yarns

  • Yarn
  • Embroidery threads
  • Knitting yarns ( eg hand, flat and circular knitting yarn)
  • Weaving
  • Industrial yarns, yarn fishing (eg fishing line ), agriculture (eg baling twine ) and meat products ( eg Wurstgarn )
  • Kitchen string
  • Special yarns: Function yarns, industrial yarns, fancy yarns

After spun raw materials, for example

  • Cotton
  • Wool
  • Synthetic fibers
  • Hemp
  • Paper
  • Mixtures of different raw materials (eg, wool blended yarn, cotton blended yarn )

Other types of yarn

Bulked

Bulky yarns are made of textured - so ruffled - synthetic fibers. The curl changes the properties of the synthetic fibers. The resulting spun yarns are very resilient, bulky and have a good thermal insulation.

Etymology

Today many thread is used synonymously with yarn. The term yarn is used in this context, however, longer. It originally stood for an existing string from dried intestines. " Yarn", strictly speaking, only a short piece of yarn with limited length.

One meaning in a figurative sense, the term received by sailors who in the spinning of yarn from old rope false or exaggerated stories, yarns told to.

The mass of the yarn in relation to the length is referred to the yarn count.
