The State PGDemidow University Yaroslavl (Russian Ярославский государственный университет имени П. Г. Демидова ) is a university in the Russian city of Yaroslavl. In its present form it exists since 1970 and today comprises nine faculties.

History

Today's Yaroslavl University walked out of the so-called School of Higher Sciences forth ( Высших наук училище ), which was established in 1803 by the Russian industrialist Pavel Grigoryevich Demidov, a great-grandson of iron manufacturers Nikita Demidov, donated. In this institution, which originally mainly state officials should develop, it was one of the oldest universities in the Russian provinces. The teaching was taken on August 13, 1804 under the direction of seven professors and with an initially very small number of students.

1834 the establishment was reformed and from then on was as pure jurisprudential college. Since 1868 it was called the Lyceum Legal " PGDemidow " and developed until the early 20th century to one of the most renowned lawyers squad forging in the Russian Empire. Every year there about 100 graduates joined their studies.

Shortly after the October Revolution in Russia, the Lyceum was dissolved by government decree in 1919 and turned into a comprehensive university that was named Yaroslavl State University for the first time. After the spin-off of the Faculty of Education in 1924 in a ( still existing ) independent educational college, the university was terminated, however, partly due to financial hardships. Only in 1970, the university was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of revolutionary leader Lenin refurbished. Since 1995, the university again bears the name of its founder, Pavel Demidov.
