Yasnogorsk, Tula Oblast

Yasnogorsk (Russian Ясногорск ) is a city in Russia in Tula Oblast. It lies on the River Waschana, a right tributary of the Oka, about 35 kilometers north of the Oblasthauptstadt Tula and 160 km south of Moscow. Yasnogorsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons ( district ) and has 16,795 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

The city Yasnogorsk is first mentioned in written documents dating from the 15th century, when a settlement called Laptewo, which was named probably after a resident landlord with the family name Laptev then. 1867 became Laptewo some importance in the construction of the railway line from Moscow to Tula and further south to Kursk; there was a railway station here, which also served as a transit point for the transport of timber below. In the 1880s founded here the merchant Ippolit Golovin a factory for the manufacture of agricultural machinery. Only in 1958, however Laptewo officially became a city in 1965 and finally got the "well- sounding" names Yasnogorsk - literally translates as " cheerful city."

Infrastructure

In today's Yasnogorsk is the machine factory, which emerged from the operation Golovin, the most important industrial operation. The city is characterized by rather rural, mainly of wooden buildings in construction. The train station of Yasnogorsk with the coming of the 19th century station building is a stop for local trains from Moscow, Serpukhov and Tula.
