Yavia cryptocarpa

Yavia cryptocarpa is the only species of the monotypic genus Yavia in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus refers to the Argentine Department Yavi, the locality of the holotype. The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words " κρυπτος " for hidden and " καρπος " for fruit from, verborgenfrüchtig means and refers to the hidden from wool felt in the crown of the plants fruit.

Description

The usual single growing Yavia cryptocarpa has reached a cylindrical to inversely conical, green plant body of stature heights between 0.5 to 1.5 inches in diameter and from 1.3 to 2.5 inches (rarely 3 centimeters). The upper part is flat, the peak 5 is lowered to 8 millimeters. The elongated areoles sit on tiny, little pronounced bumps can also missing. They are about 1 mm long and about 0.5 mm wide. From them spring from 8 to 15 rose thorns, which are glassy- white in old age.

The flowers have a length of 10 mm and a diameter of 20 millimeters. The up to 5 mm long and 2 mm wide flower cups is bald. Flower sleeve is a conical shape. The outer petals are spatulate olives, 4 mm long and 2.5 mm wide. The inner lanceolate, 6-7 mm long and 3-4 mm wide petals are white to pink with a whitish edge.

The inversely conical, bare, small fruits are embedded in the vertex depression and surrounded by the wool felt the young areoles. They contain few, dark brown, and more or less oval seeds.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Yavia cryptocarpa is in the northern Argentine province of Jujuy spread along the border with Bolivia at an altitude of about 3700 meters.

The first specimens were discovered in February 1986 by Roberto Kiesling. The specimens collected at that time were lost, however. Only in 2000 new specimens were collected and cultured. The co-authored with Jörg Piltz first description was published in March 2001 in cacti and other succulents, the journal of the German Cactus Society.

In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN, the type is called " Endangered ( EN ) ', ie performed as endangered.
