Ye Jianying

Ye Jianying (Chinese叶剑英/叶剑英, Pinyin Ye Jianying, W.-G. Yeh Chien -ying, born April 28, 1897 in Meixian county, Guangdong province, † 22 October 1986 in Beijing) was a Chinese Communist general and from 1978 to 1983 as Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National people's Congress acting President of the People 's Republic of China.

He was born as Ye Yiwei (叶宜伟) into a wealthy merchant family. His courtesy name ( s) was Cangbai (沧 白). He belonged to the Hakka minority. After 1919, the Yunnan Military Academy graduating, he joined Sun Yat-sen and the Kuomintang (KMT ). He taught at the Whampoa Military Academy in 1927 and joined the Communist Party. He took in 1927 to the failed uprisings of Nanchang and Guangzhou in part, fled to Hong Kong and studied in Moscow Military Sciences. After his return to China in 1932 he became a member of the Soviet of Jiangxi.

He served as Chief of Staff Zhang Guotaos Fourth Front Army. Ye survived the Long March, during which he helped Liu Bocheng at the crossing of the Yangtze River and after 1936 was director of the Liaison Office to the KMT, first in Xi'an, Nanjing and then finally in Chongqing. In this role, he worked with Zhou Enlai. By 1968, Ye was active as defense minister in various functions including military and in 1955 was appointed marshal. He led the conspiracy of the generals and party notables who overthrew Jiang Qing and the Gang of Four. He lost 1982, the position of deputy party chairman, when it was abolished in September 1985 and retired from the Politburo from. He died aged 89 in Beijing.
