Yellow Coach Manufacturing Company

The Yellow Coach Manufacturing Co. was founded in 1923 by John D. Hertz as a subsidiary of the Yellow Cab Company and was an early bus manufacturer in the United States.

GJ Rackham, who began his professional career after the First World War in the London General Omnibus Company ( LGOC ), was from 1922 to 1926 in the United States and recognized during his employment with Yellow Coach in Chicago the benefits of a low frame for buses. Presumably he was poached by Hertz in London to organize the entry into bus business for him. In 1926 he returned to England and joined Leyland as a chief engineer, where he was responsible for the revolutionary Titan and Tiger models.

General Motors was founded in 1925 the majority shareholder of the company and changed the name to Yellow Truck & Coach Manufacturing Company from. 1943 General Motors bought also the remaining shares of the company on and verleibte it in as GM Truck & Coach Division completely. Although GM continued the Yellow Coach product line in 1944, the brand name Yellow Coach was replaced by GM.
