In addition to the nominate Amazona ochrocephala ochrocephala seven subspecies are distinguished, if today is not completely dispensed to the division into subspecies. In this case, it is the juxtaposition of peer types:

  • Maraja amazon (Amazona ochrocephala xantholaema )
  • Natterers amazon (Amazona ochrocephala nattereri )
  • Yellow forehead (Amazona panamensis ochrocephala )

  • Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala belizensis )
  • Double Yellow-headed Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala oratix )
  • Tres Maria (Amazona ochrocephala tresmariae )

Occurrence

Their natural habitat is Brazil, Peru, Guyana States, Trinidad, Venezuela and Colombia. In 1994, the stock of the IUCN was estimated at just less than 7,000 birds. The stock declined due to destruction of rainforests and illegal fishing for the pet trade. In Stuttgart there is the only population of entflogenen birds worldwide.

Occurrence in Stuttgart

In 2011, 5-8 breeding pairs and 45 specimens were counted around the castle garden in Stuttgart by employees of the SMNS. The first animal of the only wild population outside of America was established in 1984 in the Wilhelma zoo in the local parrot aviaries. In 1985, the first time to see two birds. In 1986, the first brood with three fledged young birds. In the late 1990s, two Blue-fronted Amazons were added to the population. The species Blue -fronted Amazon and yellow -crowned Amazon hybridized ( hatched ) with each other. The hybrid between the two types are fertile.

In Stuttgart, fruits and seeds are mainly consumed, but also other plant parts. Also bark and rotten wood is eaten. To date, 63 plant species were detected in food in Stuttgart. The birds also eat parts of toxic species such as yew and ivy. The food is searched throughout the city of Stuttgart. Here, parks, cemeteries and private gardens are mainly visited by ancient trees. The birds land almost never on the floor. You can find your drinking water in gutters and crotches. In winter snow from roofs is taken. All Amazons are looking for in the evening to a communal roosting site in the center of Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. In the breeding season they are, however, in the evening and at night almost only in the vicinity of their nests. These nests are located almost exclusively in plane trees. The plane trees leaf buds are used in winter as food. The broods are held in the old plane trees of the garden and Rosenstein in the castle garden. Most are one to two, rarely three, young birds fledge. There deaths were determined by traffic accidents. The birds survive the winter, but many of the birds have partially abgefrorene toes.

It is suspected of individual ornithologists a cave competition with Jackdaw, Stock Dove and Star and a competition for food with native birds. There elimination (catch ) calls this kind outside of Europe, while other ornithologists not accept a cave and competition for food even for Germany.
