Yellow-fronted Parrot

Yellow-headed Parrot ( Poicephalus flavirons )

The Yellow-headed Parrot ( Poicephalus flavifrons ), also called Schoapapagei, is one of the least known types of long- wing parrots. It is found exclusively in the highlands of Ethiopia. Its species status is disputed, it may be a color variant of the Congo parrot. The bellows material on which the scientific species description is based, has only minor differences, so that this potentially is a color mutation. DNA tests are pending.

Statements about the inventory status of this parrot are also not yet possible. The parrot inhabits the forests of the Ethiopian Highlands and open woodland amounting to over 3,000 meters above sea level. Extensive deforestation have greatly changed the habitat of the yellow-headed parrot, so that generally assumed a population decline.

The following subspecies are described for the Yellow-headed Parrot:

  • Poicephalus flavifrons flavifrons
  • Poicephalus flavifrons aurantiiceps
