It stands on the Weißeritzstraße on the eastern edge of Frederick city, close to the congress center. The 1908-1909 built in the style of a mosque building has a total height of 62 meters and is now used as an office building.

The construction

The entrepreneur Hugo Zietz imported tobacco for its cigarettes ( among others, the brand Salem) from the growing area of Yenidze, a town in what is now northern Greece, then still part of the Ottoman Empire. Beginning of the 20th century consisted in Dresden the requirement to build in the soft image of the center no factory building which was recognizable as such. Therefore Zietz wanted to build on the property right next to the railway line, close to the city center of Dresden orientalising a building that met this requirement, while creating a memorable advertising Monument for its Oriental tobacco and cigarette factory " Yenidze ". The architect and later brother- Hitler, Martin Hammitzsch therefore designed at the suggestion of Zietz one structure in a fanciful " oriental " style that looks like a mosque interacts with the colored glazed dome and the minaret disguised as a chimney from the outside. This phenomenon coined the colloquial name " tobacco mosque."

In famous for its historical, especially baroque architecture of Dresden, the new building met in a completely different style, still very little known culture on violent rejection; the negative effects for the builder and the architect is shrouded legends. Allen hostile defiance filled the building its advertising purpose: It was all the rage and - as the Dresden had finally come to terms with it - continue around the eyes.

The tobacco factory was Yenidze Hugo Zietz until it sold in 1924, the company Reemtsma. During the Second World War the building was heavily damaged. The construction work was discussed in the film Carbide and Sorrel. From 1953, the VEB tobacco office was housed in the building, supplied the cigarette factories of the GDR with the raw material. As an exceptional monument was renovated in 1996 and the rear part of the building has since been used for offices. In the front " dome part " is the dome restaurant with the highest beer garden in Dresden, which is open in summer; the restaurant itself is open all year and every day from noon on. Furthermore, directly under the dome, place from Thursday to Tuesday Events 1001 Fairytale GmbH - Dresden - Fairytale Theatre - place.
