Station Yens

Yens is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Yen is at 563 m above sea level. Level, 6 km west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The village is located on a ridge above the valley of the Boiron, in the Vaud Mittelland, a scenic location about 200 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​9.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud means land in the Lake Geneva area. The southeastern part of the area occupied by the open slopes in yen. To the northwest of the municipality extends over the bottom Boulépenat (656 m above sea level. M. ) in a slightly undulating hills in the western border zone of the Central Plateau. The neighboring communities of yen are in the east Bussy -Chardonney, in the southeast Denens, in the south-southeast of Villars- sous -Yens, in the south Lavigny, west of Saint -Livres, in the northwest Bière, in the north- north-west and the north bale Apples.

Population

With 1152 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Yen is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 88.4 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 4.2 % and 2.7 % portugiesischsprachig (as of 2000). The population of yen amounted in 1900 to 676 inhabitants. After the population had decreased to 516 to 1960 inhabitants, a rapid population increase was observed with a doubling of the population within 40 years.

Economy

Yen was up in the mid-20th century, a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Even today, the agriculture and viticulture have an important role in the economic structure of the population. On the slope below the village, there is a bigger wine region. Ever since the end of the Middle Ages took several mills ( including Moulin Martinet, Moulin au Loup ) the water power of the Boiron. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in Morges and Lausanne.

Traffic

Although the community is located off of larger thoroughfares, but traffic still technically well developed. It is located above the main road from Aubonne to Cossonay. The motorway Aubonne and Morges -Ouest on the A1 opened in 1964 ( Geneva, Lausanne) is 6 km each from the village. On 1 July 1895, the narrow gauge railway Bière -Apples- Morges was taken with a station in Yens in operation.

History

The municipality's territory remains of a Neolithic settlement and traces have been found dating from Roman times. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1030 under the name Idens. Subsequent designations were Hiens ( 1059 ), Hyens ( 1223 ), Jens ( 1228 ), first Yens ( 1232) and Hyenz ( 1234). The name goes back to the Burgundian people named Hiwa and means for the people of the Hiwa.

Yen came in the 13th century under the rule of the Lords of Aubonne. Since the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village shared the fortunes of Aubonne. With the creation of the Bailiwick Aubonne in 1701 Yens was assigned to this. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was initially allocated to the District Aubonne, 1803 it came to the district of Morges.

Attractions

The parish church of yen in 1862 newly built. It has a bell tower of the previous medieval building, which was in 1716 in Baroque style. The former castle of the de la Harpe family dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. A neo-classical mansion of the 18th century is also obtained. In the village there are some typical arable and wine farmhouses dating from the 17th to the 19th century.
